How it works
Your browser connects to Coinbase's public market-data feed (no account needed). If that connection fails, it loads the full book over HTTPS every 5 seconds instead (every 10 seconds on phones, as each load is about 350 KB). Sizes are in BTC. The depth chart adds up every order between the mid price and the edge of the range you pick. The page redraws about once a second on laptops and every 2 seconds on phones, and pauses when the tab is hidden.
Big orders can be pulled before anyone trades against them, and other exchanges hold most of the market, so one book is a partial view. See the live chart.
